At NYPV LLC we believe in the need for a sustainable future. So much so that we not only decided to stake our careers on that belief, but we also strive to live as an example of how sustainability is feasible. While PV is our bread and butter, NYPV employees have passion for taking on side projects that help set an example for a greener future. Whether it be, solar, rainwater, green building, bio-remediation or veggie-fueled diesel engines, the NYPV team is eager to find innovative solutions. In the past two years NYPV has completed several projects that encompass this philosophy. Some notable ones include:

Off-Grid NYC Houseboat

This 1970's houseboat was saved from demolition and renovated using salvaged materials and low tech geenbuilding techniques. From its parabolic solar tea maker (created from broken mirrors and a dumpstered satellite dish) to its living machine (made out of pickle buckets, wetland plants and pvc), the boat project marries do-it-yourself garage engineering with sustainable design principles. The boat's potable rain harvesting system can collect, store and process enough rainwater to sustain the drinking/cooking needs of a small crew. Its solar array and battery bank provide enough electricity for computers, lights, and pumps. A radically re-designed (zero discharge!) domestic wastewater system, living walls and basic solar thermal technologies all form the nucleus of the project; a self sustaining structure extending beyond the confines of its walls though, the boat is wrapped in a floating wetland ecosystem. These techniques demonstrating basic principles of ecological engineering and mimicking the ”canal restorer” concepts pioneered by biologist John Todd, the boats experimental floating wetland is designed to absorb and digest the sewage strewn waters through which it is piloted.

   Brooklyn Green Bungalow

This 450 square foot house was built with a blend of reclaimed and new materials. We focused on sizing our structure so it has all the amenities of modern life without being obtrusive on the environment. The house has passive solar characteristics; this combined with strong insulation techniques creates a comfortable environment with a low energy footprint. Future plans include PV, solar thermal, rain catchment, and solar outdoor shower. ≈
